Om museet

The collection dates back to 1748, when Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau, inspector of the Navy, gave Louis XV the ship and harbor models he had gathered in the naval arsenals. It was installed at the Louvre in 1752 in a “Salle de Marine” intended to train future shipbuilding engineers. The naval museum was reorganized at the Louvre in 1827 and in the 19th century was enriched with paintings, historical documents and ethnographic collections brought back from expeditions, including models of traditional boats assembled by Admiral Pâris.

Attached to the Ministry of the Navy in 1919, the museum moved to the new Palais de Chaillot, built for the 1937 World’s Fair, and opened its galleries there from the 1940s. For several decades it broadened its scope to include underwater exploration, the merchant navy, recreational sailing and hydrography, and for a long time ran a network of museums along the coast.

The Paris site closed to the public in 2017 and reopened after six years of work with a completely redesigned route. Four “Escales” (ports of call) present the major ensembles of the collection: ship models, navigation instruments, naval sculpture and the series of Views of the Ports of France by Joseph Vernet. Three “Traversées” (crossings) address current maritime issues: trade and ports, storms and shipwrecks, and France’s naval power. The museum is now part of a network of five sites with Brest, Port-Louis, Rochefort and Toulon.
