Om museet
The A5 Bois-du-Four fortress work was built in 1932 and contains about 6,000 m³ of reinforced concrete. During the Occupation, German troops removed its metal fittings; by 1945 it was little more than a forgotten ruin.
The commune of Villers-la-Montagne bought it in 1990. Since then, a volunteer association has been restoring it: it has now been rebuilt on two levels, with more than forty living quarters.
The guided tour brings to life the daily routine of a Maginot Line crew in 1940. It features in particular the 81 mm type B mortar chamber, a rare model, the kitchen and the gunners’ quarters, and a hand-operated retractable machine-gun turret. Fourteen murals rescued from other Maginot Line fortress works and restored are also on display, as well as part of the history of iron and faience in the region.
