Om museet
The Battle of Ballinamuck was fought on 8 September 1798 and is described as the last pitched battle on Irish soil. A French force under General Humbert and Irish insurgents were defeated there by British troops led by General Lake and Lord Cornwallis in the campaign known as the Year of the French.
The visitor centre in Ballinamuck Community Hall tells the story through an interactive display and story-led exhibits, using eyewitness accounts and historical narratives. A panel looks at the aftermath of the battle.
A self-guided battle trail is signposted around the village, with information panels outside the centre, and an immersive guided walking tour of the battle site can be arranged in advance with local guides. The centre is run by the local community and visits are agreed by email or phone.
