Om museet

Cobh Heritage Centre occupies the former railway station beside the harbour in Cobh, formerly called Queenstown. The first passenger train from Cork to Queenstown ran in March 1862, and the line soon became one of the busiest in the country because it carried emigrants, mail and military supplies to the port. Between 1876 and 1899 more than 670,000 emigrants boarded liners here.

The restored Victorian station now houses the Queenstown Story, a self-guided exhibition about Irish emigration and the social, naval and maritime history of the harbour. It follows the story from seventeenth-century transportation to the colonies, through convict ships to Australia, to the great liner era. Individual stories bring the displays to life, including the message in a bottle from the Titanic, the photographs taken by Father Frank Browne on the ship’s first leg, and survivors of the Lusitania.

The centre also has a café, gift shops and a resident genealogist who helps visitors trace Irish ancestors by appointment. It sits directly next to the cruise berth, so many visitors arrive from ships calling at Cobh.
