Om museet
Dún Aonghasa is the largest of the prehistoric stone forts on the Aran Islands. It stands on a sheer sea cliff facing the Atlantic and has three drystone defensive walls, surrounded by a dense band of upright stones set to hinder attackers. The fort is more than 3,000 years old; excavations found evidence of metalworking, houses and burials, and the site was refortified in the 8th or 9th century AD.
The visitor centre, run by the Office of Public Works, is the starting point of the 1-km pedestrian route to the fort. It was refurbished with public funding of €1.6 million and officially reopened in May 2026 with a redesigned exhibition on Dún Aonghasa and the wider Aran Islands. The centre offers guided tours throughout the year.

There is no fence or barrier at the cliff edge, which drops 87 metres. Heritage Ireland lists challenging and limited access and uneven walkways, and dogs must be kept on a lead.
