Om museet
Glenveagh Castle was built between 1867 and 1873 for John George Adair, who had created the Glenveagh estate in 1857. The architect John Townsend Trench designed it as a castellated mansion modelled on early Irish tower houses and built it of local granite. Its remote mountain setting beside Lough Veagh reflected the Victorian ideal of a romantic highland retreat, and Adair's wife Cornelia maintained and extended the castle and gardens after his death.
The last private owner, Henry McIlhenny from Philadelphia, sold the estate to the State in 1975 so that a national park could be created. He gave the castle and its gardens to the nation in 1983, and the castle opened to the public in 1986. It is run today by the National Parks and Wildlife Service as part of Glenveagh National Park.
Visitors take a shuttle bus or walk from the visitor centre to the castle, where they can tour the furnished rooms on a self-guided tour with information in several languages, or book a guided tour in advance. The gardens, which date from the Victorian period, can be walked on signposted trails. The visitor centre has free exhibitions on national parks in Ireland, the reintroduction of golden eagles and the Derryveagh Evictions.
