Om museet
The General Post Office on O’Connell Street is one of the best-known buildings in Dublin. It was designed by Francis Johnston, whose foundation stone was laid in 1814, and it was the last great Georgian public building put up in the capital. On Easter Monday 1916 the rebel leaders made it their headquarters, and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read aloud outside its portico. The building was badly damaged during the week of fighting and was later rebuilt, and it still serves as Dublin’s main post office.
The museum occupies part of the building and was opened as a visitor attraction under the name GPO Witness History; it is currently marking its tenth anniversary. It presents the 1916 Rising in the wider setting of Irish history, starting with the cultural revival of the late nineteenth century, poverty in Dublin’s tenements and the impact of the First World War. It then follows the events of Easter Week and their aftermath, the War of Independence, the Anglo-Irish Treaty, the Civil War, and finally the Troubles and the peace process, including the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.
Visitors move through the displays at their own pace. Over a hundred original objects, interactive touchscreens and an immersive film bring the period to life, and a free audio guide is available on a phone. Guided tours run on several days of the week, and specially researched thematic tours can be booked by groups.
