Om museet

The Little Museum of Dublin was formed in 2011 after a public appeal asking Dubliners to donate objects that tell the story of their city, and it opened to visitors that autumn. It was the idea of Trevor White. The whole collection, now several thousand items, was given or lent by ordinary people, and the museum is a registered charity.

It occupies an eighteenth-century Georgian townhouse at 15 St Stephen's Green, owned by Dublin City Council. Entry is by timed guided tour: a guide leads visitors through the first-floor collection on the history of Dublin in the twentieth century, from the visit of Queen Victoria to the success of U2, and the other floors can be explored independently. The museum closed in April 2024 for major works and reopened fully in June 2025.

As well as the permanent collection, the house has an exhibition on the Georgian artist James Malton and Dublin's golden age, a recreation of the Irish Times editor's room of the Smyllie era, a fan-curated exhibition called U2: Made in Dublin, and Tara's Palace, one of the largest doll's houses in the world. A free schools programme, I Love Dublin, brings classes in every Wednesday morning.

A vertical platform lift at street level reaches the basement entrance, and an internal lift serves the ground, first and second floors on request; the museum asks to be told in advance if several guests need the lift. There is one accessible toilet on the basement entrance level, an induction loop for assisted listening, and seating throughout the museum and during the tour. The tour is lively and interactive, and the opening film is loud and can be skipped. A quiet space is in the ground-floor library, and a visual guide can be downloaded to prepare. Trained assistance dogs are welcome on a lead and in a harness.
