Om museet
The Roscommon County Museum is dedicated to the history of County Roscommon and is run on a voluntary basis by the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society. It has been housed since the early 1990s in a former Presbyterian church on The Square in Roscommon town, a building from 1863 that is also known as the Dr John Harrison Memorial Hall. The same building houses the town’s tourist information office.
The collection consists of items of local historic interest that were donated or lent by people from the county. Among the best-known pieces are a ninth-century inscribed stone slab from St Coman’s foundation, a Sheela-na-gig figure from Rahara church and a replica of the Cross of Cong that carries an inscription saying it was made in Roscommon. The gate of the old county gaol from the 1730s is also on show.
Behind the building, a yard displays examples of horse-drawn farm machinery. The society’s journal can be bought at the museum.
