Om museet
The centre occupies the old manse of the Presbyterian congregation at Monreagh, about a mile from Carrigans village in the Laggan district of East Donegal. Scottish Presbyterians settled in this area in the early 1600s: a congregation was formed at Monreagh in 1610 and the church, which still stands across the road, was established in 1644. The house stopped being a manse in 2002, when the congregation joined with First Derry and shared a minister.
The building was restored and opened as a heritage centre on 28 May 2009. It was developed by the Monreagh Ulster-Scots Heritage Association with funding from the International Fund for Ireland, the Irish government and the Ulster-Scots Agency. Each of four rooms covers a period of history, from the Plantation of Ulster to the present, and shows how people from the Laggan helped shape industry and politics in the United States and Canada. Several American presidents, including James Buchanan and James K. Polk, have ancestral links to the region.
Visitors tour the rooms on their own and see original photographs, paintings and other memorabilia. Local historical records help people trace their family history. Outside, a living history garden shows a round house, a plantation cottage, a forge and a flax patch. The centre also hosts music and cultural events and school projects.
