Om museet
Jörundur Jónsson, known as Hákarla-Jörundur (Shark-Jörundur), built the house in 1885–1886 from timber from Norwegian ships that ran aground off Hrísey in 1884. In 1917 the house was moved down the slope to its present site, and a statue marks the spot where it originally stood. It is the oldest house in Hrísey.
Hákarla-Jörundur was one of the country's leading shark-fishing skippers, and the house was his home in his last years. It has been restored and now houses an exhibition on shark fishing and the history of the island.
The exhibition includes, among other things, shark-fishing gear, an Eyjafjörður rowing boat, photographs of boat owners and fishermen's wives in Hrísey, and other material about the island's past. The Hrísey Tourist Association runs a tourist information centre in the house.
