Om museet
The Icelandic Punk Museum (Pönksafn Íslands) opened in 2016 in an underground space on Bankastræti in central Reykjavík. The premises were a public toilet opened in 1930, one of the first in the city, and it stood empty for almost sixteen years after it was closed around the turn of the millennium. The museum was set up by a group of punk musicians and enthusiasts, mostly unnamed, and John Lydon, singer of the Sex Pistols, attended the opening.
The exhibition covers the first fifteen years of punk in Iceland after 1978. It is built on objects, photographs and texts by Dr. Gunni, including the concert by The Stranglers at Laugardalshöll in 1978 and the release a year later by the band Fræbbblarnir of the first Icelandic punk record. In one room, headphones hang from the ceiling, and each one plays music by various Icelandic performers connected with the story.
