Om museet
The Safnahús Borgarfjarðar on Bjarnarbraut in Borgarnes houses five institutions: the Byggðasafn Borgarfjarðar (Local Heritage Museum of Borgarfjörður), the Héraðsbókasafn (Regional Library), the Héraðsskjalasafn (Regional Archives), the Listasafn Borgarness (Borgarnes Art Museum) and the Náttúrugripasafn Borgarfjarðar (Natural History Museum of Borgarfjörður). The local heritage museum was founded in 1960, and its main promoter was Haukur Jörundsson, a teacher at Hvanneyri, together with the women's association, the agricultural association and the cooperative of the region. For a long time the museum had no permanent home. It was first in premises of the Kaupfélag Borgfirðinga cooperative on Egilsgata, moved in 1970 to Borgarbraut 61 and in May 1988 to the present building. The local heritage museum received recognition from the Safnaráð (Museum Council) in 2013.
The local heritage museum preserves about ten thousand registered objects, including the grand piano of the baron at Hvítárvellir, a baðstofa from Úlfsstaðir, paintings by Collingwood and wooden objects by Þórður Jónsson from Mófellsstaðir in Skorradalur. Objects are displayed when the opportunity arises. The natural history museum goes back to an idea by Bjarni Bachmann from 1972 and holds more than 360 stuffed birds of about 140 species, as well as mammals, shells, stones and fossils.
On the lower floor is the permanent exhibition Ævintýri fuglanna (The Adventures of the Birds), which opened in April 2013 and was designed by Snorri Freyr Hilmarsson. The upper floor has the Hallsteinssalur hall, where temporary exhibitions on art and local history are set up, and the regional library is also there. Admission to the exhibitions of the Safnahús is free. The building is owned by Borgarbyggð and also serves Hvalfjarðarsveit and Skorradalshreppur.
