Om museet
The Ystafell Transport Museum (Samgönguminjasafnið Ystafelli) was founded on 28 December 1998 by the couple Ingólfur Kristjánsson and Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir, and opened to visitors in July 2000. It is the oldest museum of its kind in Iceland. The museum is based on the collection of Ingólfur, who for about fifty years collected spare parts, machines and cars.
The museum is at the farm Ystafell in Köldukinn, between Akureyri and Húsavík. More than 100 motor vehicles are on show indoors, along with objects connected with transport in Iceland spanning about 115 years. Among the exhibits is a DeLorean from 1981, of the same model as seen in the Back to the Future films.
The museum focuses on preserving Icelandic craftsmanship, especially vehicle bodywork and the modifications made to cars in Iceland. In winter the museum is closed, and the exhibits are restored at that time.
