Amsterdam Pipe Museum
Private specialist museum on smoking culture around the world in a canal house on the Prinsengracht – pipes of clay, meerschaum and porcelain, plus opium culture.
Om museet
The collection was started by Amsterdam amateur archaeologist Don Duco in the fall of 1969, when construction work on the Keizersgracht uncovered a latrine full of 17th-century clay pipes. Collecting excavated finds quickly turned into systematic research on pipe makers and their marks. In June 1975, Duco showed the collection to the public for the first time in the so-called Pijpenkamer in the back room of a gallery on the Frederiksplein.
From 1982 to 1995 the museum was housed under the name Pijpenkabinet in Leiden, in the gatehouse of the Hofje Meermansburg. During this period the collection grew beyond the Dutch clay pipe; in 1989 the Stichting Pijpenkabinet foundation was set up to run it, and the ministry recognized the holdings as a national reference collection.
In 1995 the museum returned to Amsterdam and moved into a restored 17th-century canal house on the Prinsengracht. In historic rooms with stucco, beamed ceilings and antique furniture, more than 2,000 objects have been on display ever since – from pre-Columbian pipes to meerschaum and porcelain bowls and water, opium and ceremonial pipes from Africa and Asia. A specialist pipe shop is located in the basement.
Since 2010 the fully digitized collection, now numbering more than 30,000 objects, has been searchable online; at the same time, the name was changed to Amsterdam Pipe Museum. In 2020 the museum received a European Heritage Award from Europa Nostra for safeguarding and documenting pipe heritage. The museum operates without public subsidies; visitors are welcomed personally and accompanied through the rooms.
