Om museet
The museum's story begins in 1998, when John and Naomi Groenewold began collecting (game) computers. Their rapidly growing collection was soon something they wanted to show to others and let them try out; so they converted their house, a former hotel in Epe, into a museum that could be visited by arrangement. In 2007 the collection was transferred to the foundation Bonami SpelComputers, which aims to collect, preserve and exhibit game consoles and keep them playable for visitors.
In 2011 the museum moved to the former municipal hall in the centre of Epe and from then on was open six days a week. In 2015 it moved to a building in the city centre of Zwolle near the railway station with about 3,000 m² of exhibition space; at the end of 2018 it relocated to the leisure site "De Vrolijkheid" in Zwolle, where it now has more room.
The permanent exhibition is laid out as a timeline: it begins with huge corporate computers such as the DEC PDP, punch-card systems and machines from the Statistics Netherlands (CBS), followed by home computers such as the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Apple II and MSX. The game consoles range from the Magnavox Odyssey and the first Pong machines to current consoles; in the arcade hall there are classic arcade machines and pinball tables, all of which can be played freely. Together with the foundation, the museum forms the Nederlands Instituut voor Games en Computers.
