Om museet

As early as around 1500, Anjum had a horse-powered groats mill. Around the middle of the 18th century, a wooden windmill with a stage was built in its place, operated from 1839 for generations by the Turkstra family of millers. On May 24, 1889, lightning struck during a thunderstorm, and the mill burned to the ground.

That same year, miller Doeke Turkstra had a new octagonal stage mill built for grinding grain and hulling barley, using parts of demolished mills from Leeuwarden; this is probably also where the name “De Eendragt” (unity) comes from. With a stage nine meters high, six floors and a sail span of around 22 meters, it is the tallest mill in the former Dongeradeel. Later a 40-horsepower Kromhout hot-bulb engine was added, which was used for milling until the 1960s.

In 1967 the last miller sold the dilapidated mill to the then municipality of Oostdongeradeel, which had it restored in 1970–1972. Afterward a tourist office moved in downstairs, and on the empty floors a mill museum gradually took shape with display cases and donated mill models. Today the mill belongs to the Stichting Monumentenbehoud Noardeast-Fryslân; volunteer millers usually set it turning on Saturdays. In 2012 the old riveted iron stocks of the sails underwent extensive restoration.
