Om museet
The De Walvisch mill on the Westvest in Schiedam was built in 1794 as a grain and malt mill for the genever industry; the first stone was laid by A. Nolet. It owes its name to Greenland whaling, which shaped the region at the time and which, via the opposite Walvischstraat, became the name of the mill. It was leased by 26 distillers. Time and again it suffered from storms: around 1900 part of an inner sail arm broke, and operations continued for eight months with a makeshift solution. At times it even ground magnesium for medicine and carbonic acid.
In 1928 the association De Hollandsche Molen bought the mill, and in the 1950s the miller family Kluit moved in and lived in the building. In 1982 ownership passed to the Stichting De Schiedamse Molens because a new upper sail was needed. On 14 February 1996 a fire destroyed the entire interior from the cap down to the first floor; thanks to broad fundraising campaigns the mill could be restored by 1999 and then ran again. Since 2002 there has again been a mill shop on the ground floor for flour and baked goods.
Since 2018 De Walvisch has been converted into a museum mill; the Nationaal Jenevermuseum Schiedam runs the museum part. Grinding is no longer done here, as the De Vrijheid mill takes care of that, but volunteer millers keep De Walvisch running on several days. On several floors, visitors experience a panorama show with 180-degree projection on the history of the Schiedam mills, learn how distillers' mills worked and how millers lived, and climb up to the gallery with a view of the city and of the other “giants” of Schiedam, the tallest windmills in the world.
