Om museet

Fogelsangh State stands on the site of a 12th-century Premonstratensian convent called Olijfberg. According to the chronicles, twenty nuns drowned there in the flood of 1287. After the Reformation, the property passed in 1580 to the Provincial States of Friesland.

In 1639 Theodorus van Fogelsangh acquired the estate, and in 1646 it passed to his brother Pibo Doma. A portrait of Pibo Doma with the purchase contract, painted by Pieter Nason in 1667, still hangs in the hall today. In the 18th and 19th centuries the house was altered several times; a restoration from 2001 to 2003 uncovered original 17th-century building elements, which can be seen in the lift lobby of the beletage. In the 19th century the house was shaped above all by Hector Livius Baron van Heemstra (1828–1909).

The landscape park is by the garden architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard. Today the house is an inhabited country seat that opens to visitors at times and also serves as a wedding venue. Among the collections is a 250-piece porcelain service from 1809 from the Nieuw-Amstel manufactory, shown on loan from the Van Iddekinge collection.
