Om museet

The Streekmuseum De Hansenhof stands in the scattered settlement of Hasselt on the edge of Velden, a village in the north of the province of Limburg that now belongs to the municipality of Venlo. A farm stood on the site as early as around 1510. In 1803 a new hall house in the Saxon style was built, which burned down in 1971; in 1983 an old barn also burned down, and its ruin was sold and rebuilt. In 1987 the hall house was officially reopened, and in 1992 a bakehouse was added.

The museum owes its existence to the local history society of Arcen, Lomm and Velden: it had gathered so much documentation and so many objects that in 1987 it decided to set up a museum. The exhibition presents the history of the three Maas villages through old photo albums, memorial cards and devotional pictures, everyday objects and archaeological finds from the area of the former municipality of Arcen and Velden, including finds from Arcen Castle.

Further rooms present old trades of the region, such as weaver, wheelwright, coppersmith, clog maker and cigar maker, and show an old village shop as well as the bakehouse. According to the tourism portal, there is also a classroom as it was about 100 years ago and a nostalgic kitchen. The museum is run by volunteers and is open on Sunday afternoons in summer.
