Om museet
The museum's roots lie in the collection of Ferrand Moltzer, an engineer from Bennekom. He was fascinated by the fine mechanics of music boxes and clocks, and he brought many pieces back to life through his own repairs. Between 1950 and 1970 this grew into a large collection, which was housed in the Max Moltzerstichting. To be able to show it to the villagers, Moltzer bought a house on Groenestraat in Bennekom.
There, in 1970, he also housed the historical collection of the Historische Vereniging Oud Bennekom, of which he was chairman. After his death, both collections moved into the present building, which has been run by the Stichting Kijk en Luistermuseum since 1975. Since then the music collection has grown considerably through donations and purchases.
Today the museum shows around 200 mechanical instruments from the 19th century, driven by clockwork or by hand: cylinder and disc music boxes, singing birds, musical figures, street pianos, player pianos and barrel organs, including a restored Bruder organ from 1860. Demonstrations explain how they work.
The historical collection of about 9,000 objects tells the regional history of the Veluwe around 1900. In reconstructed scenes around a village square, you can see, among other things, a clog-school classroom from 1920, a yarn and ribbon shop from 1868, a tower clock from the Bennekom church and a farm with a stable. In the entrance hall, a historical general store from 1900 sells old-fashioned sweets.
