Om museet
The manor house at Capucijnenstraat 98 in Maastricht was built in 1680 on the commission of mayor Henricus Thisius van Ingenop. It takes its present name from the Marres brewing family, who lived there for three generations. In 1964 the family sold the house to the Limburg Architecture Academy; in 1966 it became a Rijksmonument, and after restoration and expansion the academy moved in at the end of 1970.
In 1998 the then Centrum Beeldende Kunst Maastricht rented the house and prepared it for exhibitions. With the founding of Marres in 1999, the house and its 18th-century garden were opened to the public. The program focuses on the sensory experience of contemporary art and, alongside visual art, includes design, fashion, music, and food and fragrance culture. Only one exhibition is shown at a time, spreading across the entire house; the house closes temporarily to set up a new show.
The house includes the publicly accessible city garden of approx. 1,000 m², the largest of its kind in Maastricht, with fruit trees, vegetable and herb beds and a listed ice house. It also has the restaurant Marres Kitchen and a shop with art books and walking routes developed by artists. In addition there is an extensive education program for schools, which focuses on perception and sensory learning.
