In an exchange with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Mauritshuis shows 25 masterpieces from Madrid, from Jan van Eyck and Dürer to El Greco, linked by the theme of love.
Marking the painter's 400th birthday, the first exhibition devoted to his perspective illusions and vistas.
Om museet
The Mauritshuis was built between 1636 and 1641 as a city palace for Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, then governor of the Dutch colony in Brazil. The classicist building, designed by Jacob van Campen and Pieter Post, is considered a key work of Dutch architecture; at the same time, Johan Maurits played an important role in the transatlantic slave trade – a chapter the museum now addresses openly.
The core of the collection was formed by the paintings of Stadtholder Willem V, which were first displayed in his gallery on the Buitenhof. After the return of the paintings that French troops had taken to Paris, King Willem I handed the collection over to the state, and in 1822 the Koninklijk Kabinet van Schilderijen (Royal Picture Gallery) opened in the Mauritshuis. Under directors such as Abraham Bredius, the holdings grew to include numerous major works.
Since 1995 the museum has been run by an independent foundation. Between 2012 and 2014 the building was renovated and expanded with a wing in the building across the street, reached via an underground foyer.
Today the collection comprises around 850 objects, mainly Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century. About 250 paintings are on view in historic rooms with silk wall coverings; another part hangs in the Galerij Prins Willem V. In 2025, the two venues together welcomed more than half a million visitors for the first time.
