Om museet
Museum Ceuclum is housed in the tower of the former Gothic Sint-Martinuskerk (St. Martin's Church) in Cuijk. The church was built after a fire in 1480; when a new church was built in 1913, the old nave was demolished. The tower remained standing because the province and the Crown prevented several demolition attempts until the 1930s. Today it belongs to the municipality.
The name recalls the Roman Ceuclum, a fortified place on the Meuse that lay on the route from Maastricht to Nijmegen. In the 4th century the fort was rebuilt in stone and a bridge was built across the Meuse. Finds from the Stone Age, the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Roman period and the Middle Ages form the core of the collection, supplemented by information panels, photos and drawings.
The exhibition is spread over several levels of the tower. At the bottom lie the prehistoric finds; above them comes the Roman period, with a model of the situation, then the Middle Ages with the lords of Kuijk, and the period after 1500, which also includes the original prison "Kroetegat" from the 18th and 19th centuries. Those who climb further reach a panoramic view over the Meuse at a height of about 35 meters. The Archaeology Working Group Cuijk looks after the finds and research. Next to the tower are a sculpture garden and a heritage garden.
