Om museet
The Museum de Burghse Schoole presents the cultural history of the Kop van Schouwen, in the west of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. It is housed in an authentic village school from the mid-19th century, where many generations of village children were taught. The building has served as a museum since 1992 and is run by the Stichting Museum De Burghse Schoole.
The house has three exhibition rooms: a classroom as it looked in 1920, with slate boards, slate pencils, reading tiles and school pictures; a room for exhibitions that change every year; and an archaeology room. There, the story runs from the Brabers around 2000 BC through the Vikings to about 1500 AD. It also highlights the former harbor of Westenschouwen and the importance of fishing. An interactive multi-touch table opens up parts of the collection, including old class photos.
Behind the museum lies the Carolingian ring fort of Burgh, one of the best-preserved refuges from the time of the Viking raids; it was partly reconstructed in 2007. From the museum, the path ’t Hoge Burgh leads across this archaeological monument. The site also includes a schoolyard, a herb garden and a Klapbank, a bench where stories from Burgh-Haamstede are told at the push of a button. There are plans to include the neighboring headmaster's house.
