Om museet

The museum is housed in Huize Loreto, a stately former monastery in Simpelveld. When in 1875 all religious orders in Germany were ordered to leave the country, the congregation of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus settled in nearby Simpelveld. The community was founded by Clara Fey (1815–1894), who campaigned against child labor during industrialization. The sisters stayed in the house until 2012, when they returned to Aachen.

Six years later, in 2018, the museum opened. It shows the finest works produced over more than a century of monastic craftsmanship. The congregation ran studios throughout South Limburg for liturgical garments and wax figures; in particular, the elaborately embroidered vestments and altar cloths of the 19th and 20th centuries are, according to the museum, among the best in the world.

The exhibition also includes restored wax figures that were originally made as nativity figures; an area on monastery life in Huize Loreto (1877–2012), with an orphanage, school and boarding school; and the church treasury, with gold chalices, gem-set monstrances, medieval sculptures and paintings from more than 100 branches of the congregation. The museum also sees itself as a place for passing knowledge on to future generations.
