Om museet

The museum is housed in Martenastins, a townhouse built in the early 16th century for the Frisian nobleman Hessel van Martena; his descendants lived here until 1696. Later, wealthy citizens of Franeker lived in the house, and in 1694 Mayor Suffridus Westerhuis had a garden laid out in the style of André Le Nôtre. Since 2006 the building has served as a museum.

The house combines the historical collection of the town of Franeker with holdings on the former University of Franeker and has the largest collection on Anna Maria van Schurman, the first female student in the Netherlands, who lived here as a child. There is also one of the three xylotheques preserved in the Netherlands, the largest of them with 158 volumes. The rooms range from the grand kitchen via the bel étage and the garden room to the painting room and the university room.

The museum sees itself as a place to touch, smell and taste: the Aaitour was created for visitors with visual, hearing or physical impairments, and the museum received the RAAK-Stimuleringsprijs for it in 2020. It also regularly shows contemporary art by Frisian artists.
