Om museet
Museum Scheldewerf tells the story of the shipyard Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde, which built ships in Vlissingen for 125 years. It is housed in a villa more than a hundred years old on the former shipyard grounds, right next to the machine factory. The building was constructed as a first-aid post and housed the first occupational health service in the Netherlands. In the early 1960s this moved to a new building opposite; after that the works council and trade unions used the house until 1997. Items from that time are preserved in the treatment room.
After the last user, the trade union, left the house in 2003, trade unionists and the Stadsherstel foundation campaigned for its preservation. In summer 2009 an initiative group founded the Stichting Scheepsbouwgeschiedenis Vlissingen; the municipality initially lent it the building. Since 2016 the former visitor centre has borne the name Museum Scheldewerf. After the loan agreement ended in 2021, the foundation bought the house for 100,000 euros raised by sponsors; it has belonged to the foundation since 1 January 2022.
On display are tools and objects from the construction and maintenance of ships, a collection of Delft Blue and maritime paintings, and the crane room with the well-known Kampnagel and Hensen cranes. Around 25 volunteers, often former shipyard employees, lead tours through the departments of new ship construction, boiler and apparatus construction, mechanical engineering, ship repair and other areas, and describe how work was done on site.
