Twelve survivors from different European countries recount on film how differently persecution unfolded; thanks to interactive technology, two of them answer visitors' questions.
Om museet
The Nationaal Holocaustmuseum was founded in 2016 as an institution of the Joods Cultureel Kwartier (Jewish Cultural Quarter) and initially showed provisional exhibitions in the former Hervormde Kweekschool, a Protestant teacher training college on Plantage Middenlaan. The building stands opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg, which served as an assembly point for the deportation of Amsterdam's Jews during the German occupation.
During the war, a children's daycare center adjoined the Kweekschool, where Jewish children were held before being transported away. Its director, Henriëtte Pimentel, and helpers from the teacher training college smuggled hundreds of these children out through the garden and the school building and took them to hiding addresses. This resistance makes the site itself part of the exhibition.
From 2020, the building was closed for a comprehensive renovation, which took longer than planned. On March 10, 2024, King Willem-Alexander opened the renewed museum. The permanent exhibition "Nederland en de Sjoa" (The Netherlands and the Shoah) uses some 2,500 objects, photos, films, and audio recordings to trace how Jews in the Netherlands lived before, during, and after World War II, and how they were excluded, robbed, deported, and murdered.
Together with the Joods Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, and the Hollandsche Schouwburg, the museum forms the Joods Cultureel Kwartier in Amsterdam's former Jewish quarter.
