Om museet

The Nederlands IJzermuseum began in the Achterhoek, where the Dutch iron-casting industry started in the 17th century. Its location is today's DRU Industrial Park in Ulft, one of the oldest industrial sites in the country: a former iron foundry and enamel factory on the Oude IJssel river, where iron was processed for more than 250 years. The blast furnace works was founded in 1754 by four investors, including Count Johan Baptist van den Bergh. The Diepenbrock and Reigers families leased it in 1772; “DRU” stands for Diepenbrock and Reigers Ulft. Ore in the ground, charcoal and water power made the site suitable for the iron industry.

The museum shows how iron casting was invented, which techniques were used to make everyday items such as pots, stoves and bathtubs, and what this meant for households, vehicles and buildings. It opened in 2014 in the presence of the royal couple and is housed in the Afbramerij building. After DRU left the site in 1999, the factory halls were repurposed as a cultural site; seven of the building complexes are protected as national monuments (Rijksmonument).

Today the museum is decentralized (“gespreid”): parts of the collection are shown at several locations in the industrial park, and the museum is currently being reorganized. The core presentation is in the Afbramerij at the CIVON Innovatiecentrum, with further pieces in the porter's lodge, in the Loonbureau with the Tourist Inspiration Point, and in the SSP hall. The museum is a member of the Nederlandse Museumvereniging.
