Om museet

The foundation of the museum was laid by the Arnhem architect G. Feenstra, who collected tiles for years. On 12 July 1961 he opened his collection to the public, at first in a few rooms next to his bungalow on Eikenzoom in Otterlo. In 1963 he founded the foundation "It Noflik Sté", which still runs the museum today. In 1975 the foundation, with support from the municipality of Ede and the province of Gelderland, among others, purchased the collection, which until then had only been on loan.

Today the museum is the only one in the Netherlands to show the development of the Dutch tile from the 16th century to the present. On display are tile tableaux that for centuries adorned palaces, churches, schools, shops and houses, from Dutch Renaissance and Baroque decoration to Art Nouveau and Art Deco, as well as works by artists such as M. C. Escher and Karel Appel. Dedicated rooms explain how tiles are made, show international precursors and rare pieces such as the tulip tile, of which only 23 examples are known.

Since 2019 the tile collection of Helene Kröller-Müller, long forgotten and presented again in 2017, has also been on view in a room of its own. Another special feature is the large ceramic artwork "De Gelukkige Olifant", which adorned the façade of the holiday home of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in Porto Ercole for more than fifty years and has been part of the collection since 2014.
