Om museet

The Nederlands Zuivelmuseum tells the story of milk from grass to glass. It is housed in the Erve IJzerman farm, an authentic IJsselhoeve in Wapenveld. The Hogeboom family built the farm in 1898, and the IJzerman family bought it in 1930. After the death of its last resident, Dina IJzerman, in 2010, it stood empty until the organisation Boerderij en Landschap (BOEi) acquired it as a Rijksmonument in June 2012 and restored it together with the foundations Recreatie Wapenveld and Erve IJzerman.

The collection comes from the Stichting De Melkmaten. It was formed in 1995 from the collections of several milkmen, including Jaco Heeren and Peter van Moerkerk, and was first shown in a small museum on an industrial estate in Rotterdam. After the farm was purchased in 2012, De Melkmaten and the Erve IJzerman foundation joined forces to build a national dairy museum on the farm; the museum opened in 2021.

Today nine themes are spread across the farmhouse, three large barns, a carriage shed, the farmyard and the meadow: from the question of what milk actually is, through milking and processing, cheese and butter, milk distribution and advertising, to current debates in the dairy industry. The displays include historic milk carts, equipment for making butter and cheese, a large collection of books and a milk laboratory. The museum is run by the Stichting Nederlands Zuivelmuseum, a partnership between Erve IJzerman and De Melkmaten.
