Om museet
The museum grew out of a private collection. After the Franciscan sisters left in 1982, it found a home in the Sint-Antoniuskloster in Oosterhout; after 2008 it moved into the former primary school on the Zandheuvel, the historic Sint-Vincentiusschule of 1918. Since 1993 it has been an independent foundation, closely linked to the province of North Brabant and the municipality of Oosterhout, and it is run entirely by volunteers. Since its reopening in June 2010, more than 100,000 people have visited.
The collection includes toys from the period 1850 to 1970. According to the museum, it is the largest collection of Anker building blocks in Europe. In addition there are optical toys with famous magic lanterns, as well as many dolls' houses, dolls and construction toys. Central holdings are the collection of Nellie and Wim Heemskerk and dolls from the doll museum in Tilburg, which closed in 2009.
Six themed rooms structure the tour: "De Wereld in het Klein" with a miniature world, fairground, dolls' houses and the Humpty Dumpty Circus; the "Poppenparadijs" with dolls and a Barbie collection; "Stoer Speelgoed" with Dinky Toys, Meccano and wooden toys; "Kom je spelen?" with marbles, Bikkelspiel and board games; "De voorstelling begint" with magic lanterns, peep boxes and puppet theater; plus an interactive play room that is still being created.
