Om museet
The Stoomtrein Goes–Borsele is a heritage railway operation founded in 1971, making it one of the oldest heritage railways in the Netherlands. It is run almost entirely by around 200 volunteers, supported by donors, sponsors, authorities and funds. The association owns the Goes–Oudelande railway line, most of which up to Baarland can be used for heritage services; regular trains run between Goes and Hoedekenskerke.
The focus is on the train journey itself: on wooden 3rd-class benches or in 1st/2nd-class plush, passengers experience a journey as in the early 20th century, with conductors still closing the doors by hand. Besides steam trains, a diesel railcar runs, an exact replica of a 1927 Dutch State Railways train. Public rides take place on around 80 days a year, plus themed rides such as Lego days, the Halloween Express, mussel trips and the Winter Express trains.
The museum site in Goes is the historic station area with trains and the workshop, where volunteers restore and maintain the vehicles. On display there are the exhibitions "De treinen van de wederopbouw" about historic trains from the Second World War and the post-war reconstruction period, and "Veilig Spoor" on the development of railway safety systems. In addition, there are weighbridges, a loading gauge, old freight wagons and a genuine steam crane, which illustrate the former freight traffic. An escape room experience and the attractions along the line in the Landschapspark Borsele round off the outing.
