Om museet
On 21 September 1944 several armed resistance groups, such as the Knokploegen and the Ordedienst, were merged into the Regiment Stoottroepen under the command of Prince Bernhard. After the war the regiment became part of the Dutch armed forces; in 2002 it officially received the prince's name in his honour.
The historical collection moved to Assen together with the regiment from Ermelo in 1994 and was then still called the "Traditiekamer". From 1997 a listed building of the Johan Willem Friso Barracks was converted and set up as a museum; it was officially opened on 21 September 1998.
The exhibition now follows chronological order: the first floor covers the Second World War with the German invasion, occupation and resistance, the founding of the regiment in 1944, its deployment in the Dutch East Indies (1946–1950) and New Guinea, and the period of the Cold War. On the ground floor is the "Stiltekamer" commemorating fallen Stoters, along with the history of the 11th Mortar Company, disbanded in 2012, and of deployments in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Mali.
