Om museet
The Albertina goes back to Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, who began building a collection of drawings and prints in 1776. Over some fifty years he amassed around 14,000 drawings and 200,000 prints. He and his wife Marie Christine received the Palais Tarouca, built in 1744 on the bastion of the old city wall, as their residence in 1794; at the beginning of the 19th century Albert had it generously extended.
After the end of the monarchy, the collection passed into state ownership in 1919. Bombs severely damaged the palace in March 1945. Following extensive renovation, the Albertina reopened in 2003 and has since had large exhibition halls; the striking new entrance area, the Soravia Wing, was designed by Hans Hollein.
Today the collection comprises around one million works from the late Gothic period to the present, including Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare as well as drawings by Michelangelo and Rubens. Since 2007 the museum has shown the Batliner Collection, taken over as a permanent loan, with paintings from Impressionism to Picasso. Around 20 restored Habsburg State Rooms can also be seen. The Albertina Modern in the Künstlerhaus and the Albertina Klosterneuburg have added further venues.
