Om museet
The Herzogsburg in Braunau's old town dates back to the 14th century. The originally wooden building burned down around 1380, like many houses in the town, and was rebuilt before 1400. It served as the "Kasten" of the ducal administration, that is, as a storehouse for the levies and taxes of the subjects.
In 1973 the town of Braunau acquired the building and renovated it while preserving the old fabric, with support from the state of Upper Austria, the then Ministry of Science and the Sparkasse. In 1976 the former Kasten opened as the district museum. The museum also includes the Heimathaus in Johann-Fischer-Gasse, which is likewise a Gothic building and shows an old craftsman's house with a very early bell foundry workshop.
The collection documents the history of the town and district of Braunau. On display are, among other things, a historic fire brigade section, the Braunau mobile nativity scene of 1730 with around 200 figures, Gothic sculpture, archaeological finds up to the Hallstatt-period Uttendorf gold neck ring, a collection of keys and locks and a guild collection. On the upper floor, the picture gallery shows works by regional artists. The municipality of Braunau runs the museum, which offers a joint combination ticket with the Heimathaus and the Historic Bath House Vorderbad.
