Om museet

The Old Town Hall, also known as the Alte Schranne, was built in the 15th and 16th centuries and, with its two shingle-roofed onion domes, shapes the look of Gmünd's main square. Until the 18th century the town council and the town judge met here. In 1905 the dilapidated towers were taken down; in 1957 the run-down building was even meant to make way for a car park, which the Federal Monuments Office prevented.

In 1965 the town set up a city museum on the first floor, the former council chamber. It dealt with the settlement of the north-western Waldviertel, the guild system and the origins of the Gmünd-Neustadt district. During the renovation in 1988 the building regained its onion towers.

The museum was redesigned in 2008. Since then its core has been a film presentation of about 20 minutes that leads through the town's history from the 12th century to the present and can be played in German, English and Czech. Selected exhibits such as Gmünd's former executioner's sword "Else" complement the film.
