Om museet
The Altfinstermünz fortification lies in the Inn gorge between Pfunds and Nauders on the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. In the early and high Middle Ages the site served as a court venue for the Lower Engadine, Nauders and Pfunds; a first castle grew out of a rock cave. Finstermünz is first mentioned in documents in 1159, and by around 1300 tolls and customs duties were already being collected here.
From 1472, under Archduke Sigmund the Wealthy in Coin, fortifications such as the bridge tower in the Inn and the Sigmundseck were built, and in the early 16th century the mighty Klausenturm with its battlement platform and machicolations. The Chapel of the Assumption was built in 1604/05, and from 1652 the Inn marked the border between Tyrol and Graubünden here. After the customs office was relocated in 1779, the complex passed into private ownership and served as an inn and brewery; with the new road over the Kajetansbrücke it lost its importance in the mid-19th century.
The Altfinstermünz association has made it its mission to preserve and revive the fortification. Today the Erlebnisburg (adventure castle) is open in summer: a visitor centre set into the outbuildings is the starting point for a tour with an audio-guide radio play through the Klausenturm with its mirror hall and late Gothic hall, the wooden bridge and bridge tower, a natural cave with a film on customs and haulage, the rock passage to the Sigmundseck, and the chapel with an altar by Andreas Thamasch.
