Om museet

The anatomical collection dates back to the founding of the chair of anatomy in 1689. It is not a classic museum exhibition but a teaching and research collection, built up mainly by and for anatomists and nevertheless open to the public. The museum was rearranged in 2014; since 2021 it has been part of the collections network of the Medical University of Innsbruck.

Around 1,200 exhibits can be seen in the publicly accessible area and in the corridor display cases: skeletons, skulls, wet and dry specimens, specimens on developmental history and a large number of anatomical variations. The collection covers almost the entire range of anatomical preservation techniques.

Among the special features are dry specimens by the anatomist Ferdinand Hochstetter from the years 1896 to 1908, artistically painted ossuary skulls from various mountain regions of Austria, and the skeleton of the castle giant Nikolaus Haidl, who was about 2.20 metres tall and was discovered in 1866 in a crypt in Innsbruck Cathedral. From 1991 to 1998 the glacier mummy Ötzi was also kept and examined at the Institute of Anatomy. Because of its technical depth, the collection is demanding for laypeople.
