Om museet

The foundation of the museum was laid by a chance discovery: in 1990, construction work in the village of Fließ came across a Hallstatt-period bronze hoard. Further discoveries made the collection grow, such as the Bronze and Iron Age burnt-offering site on the Pillerhöhe in 1991 and the depot find from the Moosbruckschrofen in 2001. Fließ is therefore regarded as the cultural centre of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Tyrolean Oberland.

The bronze hoard, discovered by a farmer from Fließ, comprises 386 objects, including fibulae, arm and ankle rings, vessels, weapons and tools. The richly decorated belt plates are particularly valuable. From the burnt-offering site on the Pillerhöhe come offerings that were made over more than a thousand years, from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. The find from the Moosbruckschrofen comprises around 350 bronzes of the Middle Bronze Age, including the fragment of a crested helmet, which is among the oldest helmets in Europe.

A second part of the exhibition, the Via Claudia Augusta documentation centre, displays Roman finds from the ancient long-distance road and a copy of the Tabula Peutingeriana, the only surviving Roman road map. The burnt-offering site itself has been designed as the open-air museum “Alpine Sanctuary Pillerhöhe” and is freely accessible.

The museum is run by the Museumsverein Fließ (museum association), which in addition to operating the museum also organises art exhibitions, concerts and readings. Visits take place with a personal guided tour.
