The Mondsee Smoke House open-air museum lies on the hillside near the Hilfberg church, a few minutes' walk above the market town of Mondsee, with a view of the former monastery. It is regarded as the oldest open-air museum in Upper Austria and is run by the Heimatbund Mondseeland, which has been devoted to the region's history since the mid-20th century.

At its centre is the "Untere Bischofer" from Innerschwand, a log-built Mittertenn farmhouse first documented in 1416. When the West Autobahn was built in 1958, the farm had to make way and was moved to the Hilfberg. Living quarters, stable and barn lie here under one roof. There is no chimney: the smoke from the hearth fire escapes through the roof and in doing so dries the grain stored on the upper floor. At the beginning of the 20th century there were still around 200 such smoke houses in the Mondseeland.

The ensemble also includes outbuildings such as a Zuhaus, a chapel and a flax-breaking bathhouse, historic Mondsee dugout canoes, and a circular trail with old fruit varieties. In 2007/08 the Mondseeland Farming Museum was added as an entrance building, a modern timber structure modelled on agricultural outbuildings. Its permanent exhibition follows the annual cycle of farm work – forestry, grassland, arable farming – and spans the period from Neolithic agriculture through pre-industrial times to the structural change of the present day. Original tools, pictures and media stations complement the texts.
