Om museet
Ferlach in Carinthia has been a centre of gunsmithing for centuries: the guild's first craft seal dates back to 1620; at first mainly military weapons were made, and in the second half of the 19th century production switched to hunting weapons. In 2010, the gunsmith's craft was recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
The museum is housed in Schloss Ferlach, a former 16th-century manor house with stucco decoration on the windows and mighty gables. After the Carinthian State Exhibition of 1997, the museum took over a large part of the objects shown there and continued to display them permanently; in 2001 the exhibition “Mythos Jagd” (The Myth of the Hunt) with the Horten collection was added; the exhibition also includes the collection of Dr. Hellmuth Reichel.
The tour combines both focal points: it shows how handguns developed from the matchlock via the wheellock and flintlock to the percussion weapon, how Ferlach hunting weapons are made, and which luxury pieces the gunsmiths produce today as one-of-a-kind items. The second part is devoted to hunting itself – with animal specimens of native and foreign wildlife, knowledge about hunting methods, nature conservation and hunting attire, as well as the influence of hunting on art, music, literature and language. The museum is operated by Ferlacher Kommunal GmbH.
