Om museet
The castle stands on a steep granite rock above the valley of the Kleiner Kamp. Rapoto von Kuenring, mentioned in documents of 1157 and 1176, is regarded as its builder and namesake. The complex lay at the heart of the Kuenring estates, secured an old trade route from the Danube to Bohemia and was part of the chain of fortifications along the Kamp. The oldest buildings, between the keep and the gate tower, date from the second half of the 12th century.
After the Kuenrings ended up on the losing side in the conflict between Ottokar of Bohemia and Rudolf of Habsburg, the castle changed hands several times: in 1305 to the Lords of Dachsberg, in 1423 to the Starhembergs and in 1546 to the Lords of Landau. In 1664 Ernst, Imperial Count of Abensperg and Traun, bought it; it has remained in the possession of this family without interruption ever since.
Over roughly four centuries the fortress was expanded with five outer courtyards and eight gates and, according to the owners, was never taken. Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements are clearly recognisable in the structure: the massive upper castle is followed by an arcaded courtyard with sgraffito decoration and interiors with rare secular wall paintings. The guided tours also take in Gothic vaults, a winged altarpiece from the 15th century, the castle garden with an old tower clock, and the dungeon. All proceeds go entirely towards the upkeep of the castle.
