Om museet

The Kernstockhaus in Pöring was built in 1605 as the retirement house of a farm. After the death of the last resident in 1907 it stood empty. A wooden house from the early 17th century is a rarity today; the building is a listed monument.

Renewal work began in July 1971: the missing west side was rebuilt in masonry, for which the house had to be lifted, and a thatcher re-covered the roof. Because of increasing air pollution the thatched roof could not be maintained, so from 1989 it was switched to hand-split wooden shingles.

Inside, the house is meant to show how people lived some 400 years ago. The collection consists largely of furniture from the 15th to 17th centuries, including a painted Renaissance chest, a Gothic larder cupboard and a rare box bed with sliding doors; the holdings have been rearranged several times. In addition there are a collection of tools and implements, a working loom, a hand-carved cider press and a horse-driven capstan. A separate exhibition is dedicated to the Styrian priest-poet Ottokar Kernstock, after whom the house is named.
