Om museet
The painter, sculptor and draughtsman Adolf Frohner (1934–2007) is one of the defining figures of Austrian post-war modernism and, in 1962, together with Hermann Nitsch and Otto Mühl, was one of the co-founders of Viennese Actionism. He rejected a classic museum for his own work – instead he envisioned a place for exchange and debate.
Out of this idea, Forum Frohner was created in 2007 on Minoritenplatz in Krems-Stein, at the western end of what is now the Kunstmeile Krems. The architect Lukas Göbl added a plain, windowless exhibition space as a “white cube” to the historic Minorite monastery; a glass corridor connects the old and new buildings. Materials such as acoustic panels and a terrazzo floor take up references to Frohner’s works and to the neighbouring Minorite Church.
In changing themed exhibitions, Frohner’s work is combined with works by other Austrian and international artists – by the end of 2024, around 40 exhibitions with more than 260 participants had been held, including juxtapositions with Joseph Beuys, Adalbert Stifter and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Accompanying events include talks, symposia, and film, literature and music evenings. Together with the Forum Frohner Private Foundation, a three-volume catalogue raisonné on sculpture, painting and drawing was also published. The house is operated by Kunstmeile Krems.
