Om museet
The project arose within the "Kulturpark Kamptal", in which eleven municipalities had joined forces. The market town of Straß im Straßertale took over its implementation; Elsarn was chosen as the site on the suggestion of the then village head. Plans and models were developed with the Institute for Prehistory and Early History at the University of Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, in order to give the site a scientific footing.
In September 1997, students built the combined dwelling and stable building, and further buildings were then added little by little. The open-air museum was able to open at Pentecost 2001; the local population also helped with the construction. For the reconstruction, materials and tool types archaeologically attested for the period were used: oak posts, wattle walls with clay, and a thatched roof of reed, or of rye straw for the sunken-floor huts.
The site shows the everyday life of the farming population north of the middle Danube in the Roman Imperial period, that is, in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The focus is on building methods, domestic crafts and the economic and ecological foundations. These include a combined house and stable, storehouses, craftsmen's houses, a smokehouse and a demonstration garden. The grounds have also been used for experiments in experimental archaeology, for example on woodworking and agriculture.
