Om museet
Joseph Haydn bought the house in Gumpendorf, then still a suburb, from a master weaver on 14 August 1793. After his second trip to England he had it rebuilt and raised by one storey in 1794/95; he moved in in the summer of 1797. He lived here until his death on 31 May 1809 and wrote his great oratorios "The Creation" and "The Seasons". Visitors included well-known personalities of his time, among them Admiral Nelson.
The lane has been called Haydngasse since 1862, and a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the house in 1932. The Haydn Museum, together with a memorial room for Johannes Brahms, opened in 1980; it is operated by the Wien Museum, which lists the house as a site for musicians' residences. For the 200th anniversary of his death in 2009, the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned and the garden reconstructed after historical models.
The exhibition leads through Haydn's last years: on the ground floor around Vienna and Gumpendorf in about 1800, his journeys to England and daily life in the household; on the first floor around his work, his bedroom, the clavichord and salon rooms. Original instruments and references to famous guests are also on show. Since March 2026 the house has been temporarily closed.
