Om museet
The Viechtau Heimathaus bears the house name “Rabenwies” and stands above Neukirchen. The farm probably already existed in the Middle Ages; its owners can be traced by name from 1645. In 1835 it passed to the Laubichler family, who sold it to the municipality of Altmünster in 1975. At the suggestion of Anton Gründl, it was turned into a museum of the Viechtau cottage industry; the house was consecrated in August 1977 and first opened to visitors in 1978.
The exhibition shows the living and working world around 1900: furnished living and working rooms of the woodenware makers and the wide range of products that carvers, turners and clothespin makers produced over generations. Until well into the 20th century, the Viechtau was a significant European centre of woodenware, known above all for toys, spoons and the Viechtau Vogerl (little wooden birds). In addition, there is a faithfully rebuilt turner’s workshop (Gschwandthäusl), a drying house and a workshop where works by the sculptor Sepp Moser can be seen.
Since 2018, a dedicated association has run the Heimathaus, supported by voluntary members. A new building next to the old house provides space for a small demonstration forge, a drying room and an event and exhibition room. Events on customs and crafts take place all year round, such as the season opening, craft afternoon and Advent singing.
