Om museet
The Hofburg Innsbruck arose on the edge of the medieval town, where the town wall ran with its gates and towers; parts of these fortifications were incorporated into the later building. Duke Leopold IV acquired the first houses and plots from 1396, and Duke Sigmund the Wealthy began the actual castle construction around the middle of the 15th century.
Under Emperor Maximilian I the complex was considerably extended around 1500: a new residential wing was built for his second wife Bianca Maria Sforza, along with a banqueting hall on the second floor and the Wappenturm. In the 16th century it was expanded into a Renaissance palace with enclosed courtyards.
The Hofburg received its present late Baroque appearance in the remodelling under Maria Theresa in 1765–1770. The state rooms with the Guards' Hall, Giant's Hall and audience chamber were created at that time, with paintings celebrating the Habsburg-Lothringen family. Later, among others, Maria Theresa's daughter Maria Elisabeth lived in the apartments as abbess of the Damenstift; the living rooms for Empress Elisabeth were reconstructed with silk wallpapers based on patterns from 1858.
Today the Burghauptmannschaft Österreich manages the building. Alongside the Imperial Apartments, the multimedia permanent exhibition "Maximilian1", which grew out of the anniversary exhibition for the 500th anniversary of the emperor's death, has been on view since November 2019.
